Permission [to fight] is given to those who are attacked, because they were oppressed, and Allah is indeed Most Capable of granting them victory (39) Those who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said: “Our Lord is Allah” (40). (22:39-40)
Correlating Hadith:
Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq said [regarding the meaning of the Qur’anic verse]: “The masses say that this was revealed to the Messenger of Allah when Quraysh expelled him from Mecca, but, indeed, [this verse] is about the Qa’im [Imam al-Mahdi] when he rises up to avenge the blood of [Imam] Hussain, saying: ‘We are the successors of the martyr, and we demand retribution.'”
